At COSTA NOVA, we developed ecogres®, a registered trademark of COSTA NOVA that identifies a ceramic material made from recycled, non-hazardous materials sourced from ceramic by-products and industrial surplus from local non-ceramic industries. Products identified
with this mark are made with this ceramic material, whose final composition contains approximately 95% recycled materials.

The production process
The process
The ecogres production process begins with the collection, sorting and batching of ceramic surplus and by-products generated at our factories. These materials are then combined with other materials, including surplus from neighbouring industries, to stabilise
the composition of the material. The recycled clay used to produce Ecogres represents approximately 25% of the ceramic clay purchased from local external suppliers.
The process results in a homogeneous ceramic material with characteristics suitable for the production of fine stoneware, including water absorption below 0.5% and high mechanical strength.
The entire production process takes place at the same manufacturing facility, from material preparation to the production of the clay ready to be used in ceramic manufacturing.
Recover and Recycle
As mentioned above, ecogres was developed through the recovery and reuse of industrial surplus. This process allows materials that would otherwise be sent to other destinations to be recovered and reintegrated into the production of a new ceramic material.
The factory
In 2023, COSTA NOVA built and opened a manufacturing facility in the Mota Industrial Park, Ílhavo, Aveiro, with capacity to employ up to 300 people and specifically dedicated to the production of ecogres.
